SPOTLIGHT COMEDIAN: Hasan Minhaj

Indian Comedians

Early Life and Education

Hasan Minhaj was born on September 23, 1985, in Davis, California, to Indian Muslim parents from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Najme, is an organic chemist, while his mother, Seema, is a medical doctor. After his birth, he and his father remained in the U.S., while his mother returned to India for eight years to complete medical school, visiting the U.S. after three years to give birth to his sister in 1989. Minhaj attended Davis Senior High School, graduating in 2003. He then enrolled at the University of California, Davis, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 2007. During his time in college, Minhaj developed an interest in comedy after watching Chris Rock’s stand-up special “Never Scared.” This inspired him to begin performing stand-up comedy in nearby San Francisco. He also worked part-time for the website Ning, an experience he used to write comedy.

Early Career and Breakthrough

In 2008, Minhaj won Wild 94.9’s “Best Comic Standing” competition, which led to opportunities opening for established comedians such as Katt Williams, Pablo Francisco, and Gabriel Iglesias. In 2009, he moved to Los Angeles and became a finalist on NBC’s “Stand-Up for Diversity.” He also appeared in various television roles, including a recurring part on the sitcom “State of Georgia” and hosting MTV’s hidden camera show “Disaster Date.” In 2013, Minhaj hosted the web series “The Truth with Hasan Minhaj” and voiced a character in the video game “Far Cry 4.”

The Daily Show and White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Minhaj’s big break came in 2014 when he joined “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” as a correspondent. His unique perspective as a first-generation American allowed him to tackle complex social issues with humor and insight. He gained widespread recognition for his segments on race, identity, and politics. Minhaj’s tenure on “The Daily Show” lasted until 2018, during which he became known for his sharp political commentary and engaging delivery.

In 2017, Minhaj delivered a memorable performance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where he roasted then-President Donald Trump, who had boycotted the event. His performance was praised for its boldness and wit, further elevating his profile in the comedy world.

Homecoming King and Patriot Act

In 2017, Minhaj released his first Netflix stand-up special, “Homecoming King,” which focused on his experiences growing up as an Indian-American Muslim in a predominantly white community. The special received critical acclaim and won a Peabody Award in 2018. It was praised for its blend of humor and personal storytelling, as well as its exploration of issues such as racism and cultural identity.

Building on the success of “Homecoming King,” Minhaj created and hosted “Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj,” a weekly Netflix series that premiered in October 2018. The show explored contemporary social and political issues through a comedic lens, tackling topics ranging from immigration to social justice. “Patriot Act” received critical acclaim and won an Emmy Award and another Peabody Award for its innovative approach to storytelling. The series ran for six seasons before concluding in 2020.

The King’s Jester and Recent Work

In 2022, Minhaj released his second Netflix special, “The King’s Jester,” which delved into the complexities and perils of fame. The special was personal, raw, and often embarrassing, as Minhaj examined how fame affected his family and his sense of purpose. “The King’s Jester” received positive reviews for its blend of satire and sincerity, and for its exploration of the darker sides of fame.

In 2023, Minhaj returned to “The Daily Show” as a guest host following the departure of Trevor Noah. He was among several prominent individuals who served short stints hosting the show. In March 2023, he hosted the 38th Independent Spirit Awards. That same year, he had a supporting role in the Jennifer Lawrence comedy film “No Hard Feelings.”

The show continues to explore contemporary political issues through Minhaj’s unique comedic perspective.

Personal Life

Minhaj married his longtime partner, Beena Patel, in January 2015. The couple met in college, and Patel received a Doctor of Public Health in 2013. She has since worked with homeless patients and is a management consultant for MedAmerica. Minhaj and Patel are both second-generation Indian Americans; she is a Hindu of Gujarati descent, and he is a Muslim of Uttar Pradeshi descent. They have two children: a daughter born in April 2018 and a son born in February 2020. The family resides in Greenwich, Connecticut.
