What is a "clean comedian?" Basically, it's any
performer who delivers an act that is free of offensive
language or themes. What constitutes "offensive,"
of course, is up for debate. Some people find sexual
references offensive. Others have no problem with
sexual content but find violent themes, or even
meanness, offensive.
However, the general standard for clean comedy is to reject obscenities and explicitly sexual, violent, or disturbing themes. Another measurement is to determine if parents could feel comfortable with their children watching the comedy act. The easiest way to locate clean comedy is to watch comedians on late-night network TV programs, which have stricter rules about broadcasting offensive material than cable TV.

However, this doesn't mean that every comedian
who appears on these shows works exclusively "clean."
In fact, many raunchy comedians make TV appearances
with specially tailored sets to meet network standards.
While their acts may still be raunchy in tone
or theme, the more explicit references are eliminated.

themselves to working exclusively clean.
